DiskDoubler was a data-compression utility for the classic Apple Macintosh platform, developed by Symantec. It used the DDFL file extension for files compressed to occupy less space on a disk.
Unlike archive programs that normally create one archive containing multiple files, DiskDoubler compressed individual files in place. When a compressed file was opened, DiskDoubler decompressed it before passing it to the application that used it.
A related product, AutoDoubler, added background compression and could find and compress files automatically while the computer was idle. DiskDoubler and AutoDoubler are obsolete, and the format is no longer supported by Symantec.
Open a DDFL file on a classic Macintosh computer with DiskDoubler. The software must be available in an environment that supports classic Macintosh applications.
Current versions of macOS do not provide built-in support for DiskDoubler files. If the original software is unavailable, a compatible classic Macintosh environment may be required to decompress the file.
To convert a DDFL file, first decompress it with DiskDoubler, then save or copy the recovered file in a format supported by a current application.
