The format is intended to distribute a coordinated collection of icons, which can include folder icons, application icons, system icons, and theme configuration data. The exact internal structure depends on the program that created the package; an ICONPACK file may contain image resources, icon files, preview images, and a manifest or settings file.
ICONPACK is not a broadly standardized cross-platform format. Different icon customization products may use the same extension for incompatible package structures, and some desktop environments instead use directory-based themes containing files such as PNG or SVG images and an index file.
On Windows, the file should normally be opened through the icon customization software that supplied it, particularly Stardock IconPackager where applicable. macOS and Linux do not provide a generally supported native application for this extension; however, an archive utility may reveal the contents when the package uses a conventional archive container.
Because packages can contain platform-specific paths, metadata, or proprietary resources, manually copying individual icons may not reproduce the complete theme. Use the original program whenever possible, and obtain packages from trusted sources because theme archives can contain unexpected executable or script files.
First install the icon-theme application associated with the file, then use its Open, Import, or Install package command. On Windows, Stardock IconPackager may open compatible packages. If the file came from another product, use that product instead.
There is no universal ICONPACK opener for macOS or Linux. You can try The Unarchiver, 7-Zip, Archive Utility, or the Linux Archive Manager to inspect a package if it is archive-based. Do not simply rename the file unless the creator's documentation confirms its underlying format.
ICONPACK files usually cannot be converted reliably with a general online converter because the extension does not define one standard structure. When supported, open the package in its original customization application and export the icons or save the theme in that program's supported format.
For manual conversion, make a backup, inspect the package with a trusted archive utility, and convert the extracted image resources to formats such as PNG, SVG, or ICO using desktop graphics or icon tools. Rebuilding a package for another platform requires recreating its manifest and directory structure, so online conversion services should be used cautiously and only with non-sensitive files.
