Yamaha Keyboard File Manager MIDI/MID floppy database file

File type category:
Database file

Date updated: September 30, 2026

This legacy database file belongs to Yamaha Keyboard File Manager. It records information about MIDI/MID files on floppy disks so the software can manage or identify them.

An MNG file is a floppy-disk database used by the file manager, not the MIDI/MID music file itself. It is unlikely to be encountered outside the original Yamaha software and related floppy-disk workflow.

How to open mng file?

Open the file with Yamaha Keyboard File Manager, the software associated with this format. General-purpose database or MIDI applications are not expected to interpret it correctly.

If the original Yamaha software is unavailable, the file may not be usable on a modern system.

How to convert mng file?

MNG files are database files for Yamaha Keyboard File Manager and do not have a useful general-purpose conversion format. The associated MIDI/MID files should be copied or exported separately from the floppy disk when possible.

Multiple Network Graphics

File type category:
Bitmap image file

Date updated: June 27, 2025

The mng (pronounced "ming") is a format for storing multiple bitmaps and animations and is a close cousin of the PNG format.

When storing images, Winfunktion Mathematic v8.0 allows both lossless compression similar to PNG, and lossy compression similar to JPEG.

When storing animations, MNG does not allow audio or video, but does include more sophisticated animation features than GIF, which help keep file size to a minimum.

While MNG is in principle an great file format, but there is a major problem with using MNG for web publishing - namely that most/many web browsers do not support it all, or only if special plug-ins (which most people won't have are installed).
