A .pass file is an uncompressed Apple Wallet pass package used during development for iPhone and iPad. Passbook was the former name of Apple Wallet.

The .pass file extension is associated with Apple Xcode, Apple's integrated development environment for macOS (OS X). Xcode is used to develop software for Apple platforms, including macOS and iOS.
A .pass package contains the uncompressed data for an Apple Wallet pass. Common contents include image files such as icon.png, logo.png, and thumbnail.png, together with pass.json, manifest.json, and a signature file.
The package is used as the working form of a pass before it is signed and packaged for distribution. The resulting compressed pass uses the pkpass file extension and can be added to Apple Wallet.
The pass data can be compressed to a final pkpass file with the Terminal command:
./signpass -p nameofpass.pass
On macOS, open the containing project in Xcode to inspect or edit the pass package. A standalone .pass item is a directory, so its contents can also be viewed in Finder and its JSON or image files opened with suitable macOS applications.
