The sdz file extension is associated with Spring, an open-source real-time strategy game engine for Microsoft Windows.
An sdz file contains packaged Spring content, such as a game, modification, map, or related resources. The engine loads these archives as part of its game and content installation.
SDZ archives use ZIP-compatible compression. The format is now largely a legacy Spring package format and may be encountered in older Spring game content.
To use an sdz file, place it in the appropriate content directory for a Spring installation and select the associated game, map, or modification in Spring's launcher.
Because an SDZ file is a ZIP-compatible archive, an archive utility can usually inspect or extract it. If the utility does not recognize the extension, make a copy and rename the copy with a .zip extension.
An sdz file normally does not need conversion. Spring uses the archive in its original form, and extracting it does not create an equivalent standalone game or map.
The archive can be unpacked and its contents repackaged with a suitable archive utility, but the Spring directory structure and required files must be preserved. Conversion to another archive format is only useful when that format is supported by the relevant Spring installation.
