The smtmp is not actually file extension, but a folder created by malicious Ttrojans known as Trojan:Win32/FakeSysde by Microsoft, or Trojan.Win32.FraudPack.csve (Kaspersky), Troj/FakeAV-DOF (Sophos) as well as TROJ_FAKEAV.ORT by Trend Micro.
This very annoying Trojan virus creates the SMTMP folder in C:\Users\%User\AppData\Local\Temp\ folder and moves to it all files from Start and Desktop folders, basically screwing up users Start Menu and Desktop.
It also modifies the moved files with hidden tag, so they are no longer visible to common users (with hidden files hidden in system).
In most cases it also adds itself in executable form to be run at every startup. Might also display fake warnings and security scans and tries to scams users to purchase a rogue Antivirus product and to share their confidential information such as credit card number.
