The TAR format is a Unix archive format that combines files and directories into a single archive without compression. LZMA compression is then applied to the TAR archive, producing a .tar-lzma file.
StuffIt Expander, from Smith Micro Software, can extract this type of archive on Apple macOS and Mac OS X. The TAR layer contains the archived files and directories.
On Apple macOS or Mac OS X, open the .tar-lzma file with StuffIt Expander. You can usually double-click the file or open it from within the application; the software extracts the files contained in the TAR archive.
If StuffIt Expander is not available, use an archive utility that supports both TAR archives and LZMA compression.
A .tar-lzma file normally does not need conversion to be used. Extract it with StuffIt Expander, then create a new archive in the required format with an archive utility that supports that format.
Changing the compression method also requires extracting the TAR archive and recompressing it; simply renaming the file does not convert it.
