SLIDE is a language and viewer for describing and interacting with hierarchical, dynamic environments. Its viewer parses an .slf scene file into a hierarchical directed acyclic graph (DAG), which it renders with OpenGL.
SLIDE uses Tcl as its dynamics scripting language and Tcl/Tk for the windowing interface. A TCL file can therefore define behavior and interaction for the scene and connect that behavior to Tcl/Tk controls.
SLIDE was designed as an educational system with a relatively simple rendering pipeline based broadly on the OpenGL model. An all-software implementation divides the viewer and graphics-pipeline material into ten assignments suitable for a single semester. The TCL file is source code for the SLIDE environment rather than a general-purpose scene interchange format.
Open the file in the SLIDE viewer to run its scene behavior and interaction scripts. Because the script can contain SLIDE-specific commands, a standard Tcl interpreter may not be able to run it correctly on its own.
To inspect or edit the source, use any plain-text editor. Tcl/Tk is required for the interface and widget functionality used by the script.
A TCL file used by SLIDE is source code, so it has no meaningful direct conversion to a general graphics or document format. Keep it as text when moving it between environments.
