The vdr file format is associated with VirtualDub, a video capture and processing utility for 32-bit and 64-bit Microsoft Windows. VirtualDub is distributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL).
A vdr file does not normally contain a complete, independently playable video. It acts as a reference to an active VirtualDub frame-server session, allowing a compatible application to read the video frames that VirtualDub supplies.
VirtualDub creates the file when its frame-server feature is used. Pavtube HD Video Converter and MPEG Streamclip can also work with this format on Apple macOS and Mac OS X. The format is primarily a legacy interchange method for video-processing workflows rather than a current general-purpose video format.
On Microsoft Windows, open the vdr file in a compatible video application while the corresponding VirtualDub frame-server session is running. VirtualDub creates the file and supplies its frames to the client application.
On Apple macOS or Mac OS X, Pavtube HD Video Converter and MPEG Streamclip can open or import vdr files. A VDR file may not work after the VirtualDub session that created it has ended.
A vdr file is not a self-contained video, so it is not normally converted directly. Instead, open it in a compatible application while VirtualDub is serving the frames.
VirtualDub or the receiving video application can then export the served video to a standard video file using that application's available output options.
