The original CompuShow was released as ShareWare in July 1987, making its first appearance in the CompuServe "Picture Support" forum. Within weeks, fans distributed it to many other CompuServe forums, hundreds of bulletin board systems, other commercial information services, and over the Internet. Since the DOS program ("cshow.com", and later "cshow.exe") was started by typing the file name "cshow" at a DOS command prompt, CompuShow very quickly became known simply as "cshow".
