The div extension is probably best known to be associated with a geographic data analysis and mapping tool called DIVA-GIS by Robert Hijmans.
The div file represents a map projects along with additional settings and parameters and properties. It does contain layers, but not the actual layer data which are saved in a separate *.shp file (shape file).
You can work with these projects only in DIVA-GIS software.
Projects can be usually exported to all sorts of exchange formats or even pictures.
