Přípona souboru jpg je spojena s formátem souboru JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group). JPEG je ztrátový algoritmus komprese obrazu, který výrazně snižuje velikost původního obrázku na úkor kvality. Čím vyšší je kompresní poměr, tím nižší je kvalita souboru .jpg.
JPEG je založen na 24bitové barevné paletě a podporuje 16,7 milionu barev. Nicméně se jedná o ztrátový kompresní formát, což znamená, že dochází ke ztrátě komprimovaných informací. Kompresní poměry se mohou pohybovat od 10:1 do 20:1 a většina grafických aplikací (například Adobe Photoshop) umožňuje zvolit míru komprese.
Formát souboru JPEG je nejvhodnější pro digitální fotografie, kde je typický kompresní poměr s velmi nízkou ztrátou kvality kolem 10:1.

Přípona souboru jpg se používá pro proprietární upravený běžný JPG formát souboru, ke kterému jsou přidána speciální metadata použitelná v CompactDraw, takzvané e-JPG soubory.
e-JPG lze otevřít a zobrazit v jakémkoli programu schopném pracovat s běžným jpg formátem souboru, ale pouze CompactDraw bude schopen číst metadata a upravovat oddělené objekty uložené v e-JPG souboru.
Použijte CompactDRAW k otevření grafických souborů *.jpg e-JPG.
Použijte kompatibilní nástroje pro export souborů CompactDRAW *.jpg do jiných bitmapových formátů.
