The a09 file extension is associated with ARJ. Its one part of a multi-volume compressed ARJ archive.
arj is the native format of ARJ archiver. ARJ is a file archiver that compresses files into a disk space saving archive. It is fast, reliable, and has a rich set of features which include Windows 9x, Millenium long filename support, file version management, data damage protection, ANSI escape sequence display handler, configurable command options, multiple volume archives (archives that span diskettes) and much more.
Some ARJ files can be parts of a multi-volume sequences. In ARJ you can split a huge archive to a few smaller files, which are called volumes.
ARJ archiver does use the following sequence:
In order to unpack the multi-volume ARJ archive, you need to place ALL of the split parts in the same directory and start extraction of the first volume (.arj). The program will automatically use all of the parts to extract the content of the archive.
The a09 (e.g. Avatar.a09 file) file is only one part of ARJ multi-volume archive. If you want to extract this file, you must have all parts of the ARJ multi-volume archive. Open the first part of ARJ (e.g Avatar.arj file) multi-volume archive in ARJ application and extract files from ARJ multi-volume archive.
It is not possible to convert only one part of ARJ multi-volume archive. Only complete ARJ archive can be converted in to another archive or compression format. The easiest way how to convert complete ARJ multi-volume archive is to decompress the ARJ archive with the use of ARJ or any other supported archiver and repack the content with another compression or archive application of your choice.

The .a09 file suffix is associated with ALZip, an archive utility for Microsoft Windows. It is one part of a multi-volume compressed alz archive.
An ALZip split archive normally includes the main .alz file followed by numbered volume files such as .a00 through .a09. The .a09 file is the eleventh volume in that sequence and contains part of the compressed archive data.
All volumes must remain together with their original names for the archive to be opened and extracted correctly. The format belongs to ALZip's multi-volume archive feature and is intended for transferring or storing an archive as a set of smaller files.
On Microsoft Windows, install or use ALZip and place the complete set of volume files in the same folder. Open the main .alz file rather than the .a09 file; ALZip will use the numbered volumes during extraction.
If any volume is missing, renamed, or damaged, the archive may not open or may fail during extraction.
The .a09 file cannot be converted meaningfully by itself because it is only one volume of a multi-volume archive. Obtain every volume and open the main .alz file in ALZip first.
After extracting the contents, create a new archive in the required format with ALZip or another archive utility that supports that format. This produces a new archive rather than converting the individual .a09 volume.
