Ransomware encrypted file

CryptoLocker and TeslaCrypt are Windows ransomware families that encrypt users' documents, spreadsheets, Outlook data files, pictures, Photoshop files, PDF files and other data, then demand payment for a decryption key. The encryption uses cryptographic keys rather than an ordinary user password, and the exact behavior depends on the malware variant.
TeslaCrypt can also target game save files, replays and other data from games such as World of Warcraft and World of Tanks.
Reported target extensions for CryptoLocker include 3fr, accdb, ai, arw, bay, cdr, cer, cr2, crt, crw, dbf, dcr, der, dng, doc, docm, docx, dwg, dxf, dxg, eps, erf, indd, jpe, jpg, kdc, mdb, mdf, mef, mrw, nef, nrw, odb, odm, odp, ods, odt, orf, p12, p7b, p7c, pdd, pef, pem, pfx, ppt, pptm, pptx, psd, pst, ptx, r3d, raf, raw, rtf, rw2, rwl, srf, srw, wb2, wpd, wps, xlk, xls, xlsb, xlsm and xlsx.
Reported target extensions for TeslaCrypt include unity3d, blob, wma, avi, rar, DayZProfile, doc, odb, asset, forge, cas, map, mcgame, rgss3a, big, wotreplay, xxx, m3u, png, jpeg, txt, crt, x3f, ai, eps, pdf, lvl, sis and gdb.
Depending on the variant, the malware may encrypt files with AES or a related combination of encryption methods and rename them with the .ecc extension. It commonly displays a warning demanding payment and may create a HELP_RESTORE_FILES.txt file in affected folders with instructions for restoring the files.
This is a ransomware-encrypted file rather than a standard format with a fixed internal structure. The format is associated with older CryptoLocker and TeslaCrypt infections, and recovery depends on the particular variant, available decryptors and backups.
An .ecc file cannot normally be opened by the program that created the original file. Do not rename it or pay the ransom solely to try to open it. First disconnect the infected computer as appropriate and scan it with Windows antivirus software such as Avast Antivirus, Kaspersky Anti-Virus, BitDefender, Norton Antivirus, AVG Antivirus or Avira AntiVir Personal.
After removing the infection, a suitable decryptor may work for some TeslaCrypt variants. TeslaDecoder, Trend Micro Ransomware File Decryptor and Cisco TeslaDecrypter are Microsoft Windows tools that can be tried when their supported variant matches the infection. There is no guaranteed decryption method, and decryptors for one variant may not work for another.
An .ecc file cannot be meaningfully converted to another format. It must first be decrypted, if a working decryptor exists for the specific ransomware variant; the resulting file can then be opened or exported by software that supports its original format.
If no decryptor works, restore the original files from a backup after the malware has been removed. A clean computer or a reinstalled operating system should be used before restoring the backup.

The ecc file extension is also related to dvdisaster, a media disc archival software tool with support for data protection.
The ecc file contains error-correction data.
ECC suffix is also used by another verification tool called ICE ECC, most likely for similar purposes.
This file type is not meant to be opened and accessed directly by the user. It works as part of the recovery procedure.
A conversion for this file type is unlikely.
