XVID is not a file extension and not even a file format. It is a video codec library based in MPEG-4.
The confusion probably comes from torrents, where mostly in the past, videos shared through P2P network had several dots in their file name, ie. "movie.xvid.release.avi".
Today, most video files have spaces instead dots in their file names. The actual file extension and the format is after the last dot. Most likely it will be the AVI format.
The Xvid project has been thought of and invented by Michael Militzer in 2001. Since then, the Xvid code base has been further developed by a core team of four to six engineers who have developed all the Xvid key features as well as plan and design the Xvid structure and interfaces.
Various multimedia players are able to playback digital videos stored in XviD format.
Many video encoders enable users to convert *.xvid files to other video file formats.
