The IBM 4758 PCI Cryptographic Coprocessor provides a tamper-responding environment for cryptographic functions and security-sensitive custom applications. It supports DES, RSA and DSA processing, secure key storage and sensitive computation while off-loading cryptographic work from the host server.
The coprocessor contains a 486-class processing subsystem, specialized cryptographic electronics, a cryptographic-quality random number generator and secure persistent storage. Apart from a small bootstrap loader, its software is loaded from the host system. The coprocessor accepts only digitally signed software that it has validated, including software supplied by IBM, other vendors or developed with IBM toolkits.
IBM supplied a PKCS #11 version 2.01 implementation and an IBM Common Cryptographic Architecture implementation for the 4758. These provided standard cryptographic services and a base for financial-industry processing and custom applications. The coprocessor was used with Windows NT, Windows 2000, AIX, OS/400, z/OS and OS/390 systems, and provided high-security cryptography for IBM server platforms and many personal computers.
The IBM 4758 hardware was certified under FIPS PUB 140-1 at levels 3 and 4 and received German ZKA approval for critical financial transaction processing on z900 servers. CLU files belong to this legacy IBM cryptographic-coprocessor environment and are not a general-purpose interchange format.
A clu file is not intended to be opened with a text editor or a general-purpose file viewer. It must be handled by the IBM 4758 support software and loaded to a compatible IBM PCI Cryptographic Coprocessor.
