The MCA file extension is associated with Minecraft, a sandbox-building indie game originally created by Markus "Notch" Persson. Anvil is the name of the world-storage format used by the game.
An MCA file stores region data for a Minecraft world. A region contains the data for multiple chunks, including terrain, blocks and other information needed to load that part of the world. The files are normally kept in the region directory inside a world save.
Minecraft Java Edition uses MCA files when it saves and loads worlds, including on Microsoft Windows. The format remains in use, so an MCA file is normally meaningful only as part of the corresponding Minecraft world save.
Open an MCA file by placing it in the region directory of a Minecraft Java Edition world save, then load that world in Minecraft. The game expects the file to be in the correct world-save location and cannot use an isolated region file as a normal document.
Make a backup of the world before replacing or editing MCA files. A compatible Minecraft world editor may also be able to inspect the stored region data, but ordinary text or image applications cannot open it meaningfully.
An MCA file is not normally converted to another file format. It is a component of a Minecraft world save, and Minecraft Java Edition continues to use the Anvil format directly.
World-editing tools may provide export options for selected world content, but those exports are not a direct conversion of an MCA file and depend on the particular tool and target format.
