File extension stockholm is used for a multiple sequence alignment format used by Pfam, Rfam and Dfam, to disseminate protein, RNA and DNA sequence alignments.
Stockholm format files may also feature .sto or .stk instead.
The format is plain text and is designed to be both human-readable and machine-readable. It includes features for representing sequence annotations, secondary structure, and other information that can be associated with a multiple sequence alignment. Each file in Stockholm format begins with a line containing the string "# STOCKHOLM 1.0", and ends with a line containing only "//".
