File extension html is mainly related to the Hypertext Markup Language that provides means to create structured documents by denoting structural semantics for text such as headings, paragraphs, lists, links, quotes and other items. It is the main language for writing web pages.

HTML formats texts, tables, images, and other content that will be displayed on the page that can be viewed using any web browser.

Since 1996, the HTML specifications have been maintained, with input from commercial software vendors, by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). However, in 2000, HTML also became an international standard (ISO/IEC 15445:2000). The latest milestone is HTML5, still improved until full specification scheduled for 2014.

On DOS-based computers, which can not understand extension with more than 3 character the htm file extension was used instead.
