The RCF file extension is related to Rhapsody, an online music service run by RealNetworks. An RCF file is used for Rhapsody storage.
Rhapsody launched in December 2001 and was the first music service to offer streaming, on-demand access to nearly its entire library of digital music. The RCF format is proprietary service data rather than a general-purpose music format.
Downloaded files came with restrictions on their use. These restrictions were enforced by Helix, RealNetworks' version of digital rights management. RCF files should therefore be treated as legacy application data and not as files that contain freely transferable music.
Open an RCF file with the Rhapsody software that created it. The file is intended for use by the service software and normally cannot be opened meaningfully as a document or played as an audio track.
Because RCF is a proprietary legacy format, current media players and general-purpose file viewers are unlikely to support it. Do not edit or rename the file if it is still needed by the original software.
