The .fam file extension identifies a Famicom or NES emulator ROM image. The file stores a digital copy of the game data from a compatible cartridge; it is not the emulator itself or a saved-game file.
OpenEmu is a macOS application that runs games through emulator cores. When its NES or Famicom support recognises the image, OpenEmu can use the .fam file as the game source.
This is a specialised ROM-image extension rather than a general-purpose document format. Its use depends on emulator support and on the particular ROM image, so the format may not be recognised by every NES or Famicom emulator.
On macOS, install OpenEmu and import the .fam file into its library, or use OpenEmu's open or import command.
If OpenEmu does not recognise the file, it may not support that particular ROM image or extension. Do not open it in a text editor, because the file contains binary game data.
A .fam file is already a ROM image, so it normally has no useful document conversion. Opening it in OpenEmu does not convert the file; it imports and runs the game image.
For use with another emulator, retain the original file and use that emulator's documented import support. Renaming the extension alone does not convert the image.
