The MOV File extension is related to Apple QuickTime Movie, a standard Macintosh video file format.

Apple Computer developed the QuickTime file format to create, edit, publish, and view multimedia files. QuickTime format can contain video, animation, graphics, 3D and virtual reality (VR) content. Only QuickTime files version 2.0 or earlier can be played in Windows Media Player. Later versions of QuickTime require the proprietary Apple QuickTime Player.

MOV file format is a multimedia container format that can store one or more tracks of data such as video, audio, text, and effects. Each track can either contain a digitally encoded media stream, playable using the appropriate codec, or a data reference to a media stream located in another file. In practice this means that it can be easily edited since there is no need to rewrite all media data after editing. Tracks are maintained in a hierarchical data structure consisting of objects called atoms. An atom can be a parent to other atoms or it can contain media or edit data, but it can't contain both.

This flexible format isn't limited only to Macintosh operating systems. The QuickTime (.mov) file format functions as a multimedia container file that contains one or more tracks, each of which stores a particular type of data: audio, video, effects, or text (e.g. for subtitles).
