File extension xxx is most recently associated with infamous ransomware known as TeslaCrypt. In it's latest reincarnation this malicious software encrypts and locks users data and renames the extension to xxx, ttt and lately also micro.
It also leaves instructions and ransom demands in a special text file "HELP_RESTORE_FILES.txt" file found in affected folders.
This particular version of TeslaCrypt was discovered in January 2016.
Note: Since May 2017 Extractor Ransomware also uses xxx extension for one of its variants.
