The mov file extension is related to the AutoCAD AutoFlix, an addon for AutoCAD to make presentations and animations using the 3D abilities of Release 10.
The animator was a set of commands that ran in the AutoCAD editor for defining animation paths and sequences. It was all sequential command line, no fancy key timing or Hierarchies. If you wanted fingers to move with the hand but still move themselves you had to noodle out the combined motions yourself.
