SAFE file extension - Standard Archive Format for Europe
What is safe file? How to open safe files?
File type specification:
File extension safe is used for a specific GIS format by the European Space Agency (ESA).
The purpose of the Standard Archive Format for Europe is to serve as a common format for Earth observation data transmission and archiving within the archives of the European Space Agency (ESA) and maybe other agencies that collaborate with it.
Based on XML, the SAFE format contains the data files along with the metadata that goes with them. It is made to be capable of handling massive amounts of data, self-describing, and machine-independent. A number of ESA missions, such as the Sentinel series of satellites, employ this format.
