The ss file extension is also by some highly specialized biochemistry programs.
The ss file contains protein data used by program called Ribbons. These files contain secondary structures that are not required, but is recommended. These files are the most complicated. They control both the coloring and the overall shape of the ribbon. These files should be generated automatically by 'pro-ss', then edited or modified to the desired effect.
The ss file consists of a 1-line title, a 1-line header, and one line of data for each residue. The 1-line header consists of blank-separated strings --- the ss-residue-key strings (currently a maximum of 20).
The ss file extension is also used for sample sheet in dnaLIMS 377, also a scientific software. The same suffix is probably coincidence.
This ss file type entry was marked as obsolete and no longer supported file format.
This type of file is no longer actively used and is most likely obsolete. This is typically the case for system files in old operating systems, file types from long discontinued software, or previous versions of certain file types (like documents, projects etc.) that were replaced in higher versions of their original programs.
