File extension dif is mainly known for its use for spreadsheet files saved in Data Interchange format.
Data Interchange Format, also known as Navy DIF, is a text file format used to import/export single spreadsheets between spreadsheet programs (OpenOffice.org Calc, Excel, Gnumeric, StarCalc, Lotus 1-2-3, FileMaker, dBase, Framework, Multiplan, etc.).
The .dif file is a workbooks, with the limitation that single workbook contains only single spreadsheet. These files were originally used by VisiCalc.
Most current spreadsheet programs are able to work with .dif files, or at least import the data.
Whilst DIF spreadsheets were mostly used in the past, some programs still support it and can import data from them.

The dif file extension is related to the Diff output from Diff command script for Patch command file format.
Diff is a file comparison utility that outputs the differences between two files, or the changes made to a current file by comparing it to a former version of the same file.
Diff displays the changes made per line for text files. Modern implementations also support binary files. The output is called a diff or a patch since the output can be applied with the Unix program patch. The output of similar file comparison utilities are also called a "diff". Like the use of the word "grep" for describing the act of searching, the word diff is used in jargon as a verb for calculating any difference.
