The mac file extension is used for a native format of Apple Macintosh MacPaint application.
The format stores 720 by 576 pixel bitmap, compressed using the PackBits method. Because the image size is fixed, larger images will be cropped if necessary, and small images expanded with whitespace. As well as storing the bitmap picture, MacPaint files also contain thirty-eight 8 by 8 pixel fill patterns, which can be used in the MacPaint application for drawing. These fill patterns are generally ignored (or left blank), by other applications.
