PKPASS file extension - Apple Wallet pass data

What is pkpass file? How to open pkpass files?

File extension pkpass is exclusively related to a special format for Apple Wallet/Passbook service for iOS devices as well as macOS (formerly OS X), which allows users to manage their boarding passes, movie tickets, loyalty cards in an electronic form.

The Wallet app (Passbook) is integral part of the system since iOS 6 and OS X 10.8.

These passes (pkpass) are typically distributed via e-mail messages directly to devices (iPhone, iPad, macOS) when a purchase is made at a vendor that supports this service.

The pkpass file is a ZIP archive that contains the following data in a structured manner.

  • icon.png
  • logo.png
  • thumbnail.png
  • pass.json
  • manifest.json
  • signature

The files within the archive have specific names to denote their function within the service. A preview of the ticket is saved in the thumbnail.png file, so users on desktop platforms may simply extract the file and view it using any graphics viewer.
