The ts file extension is used for MPEG-TV compressed video files, recorded with DVD recorders, or DVB receivers with recording options. Video and audio data are stored in MPEG-2 multimedia file format defined in MPEG2 Part 1, Systems (ISO/IEC standard 13818-1). It is also known as ITU-T Rec. H.222.0.

The ts format is container format that encapsulates packetized elementary streams with error correction and stream synchronization features. It is also popular to use in broadcast applications such as DVB and ATSC.

DVD and DVB recorders often save MPEG-TV recorded files as multiple files on a DVD medium, or hard drive  like name1.ts, name2.ts, name3.ts, etc.
